Sometimes in the midst of all the bargain shopping, especially around the holiday time, we really feel the pressure of a bad year financially. Maybe you’ve been laid off. Maybe you are just frustrated with where you are in life. Maybe you want so much more for that new baby that it hurts and you are upset that you cannot provide it. Sometimes these feelings can be overwhelming and lead to the holiday blues.

In my opinion, the very best way to beat the holiday blues it to take the focus off your self; let’s be truthful – if you look at the source of your blues it is because you are depressed about how little YOU have or how little YOU can afford, or how YOUR life isn’t what you want, etc., etc. Take the focus of your self and look at those less fortunate than you. No, don’t scoff at their misfortune to make you feel better. Go help someone else. It takes your mind off yourself plus it really does make the human soul feel better when helping another. Call a nursing home and see who doesn’t have any visitors for Christmas. Even though times are tight, there are probably a few things in the closet or in storage that don’t fit that could be of use to someone else. Help with the local shelter or soup kitchen. If you don’t go to church, then find a Christmas Eve Candlelight service.

Finding Bargain Gifts

Author: Josh
I thought I would continue my theme of gift buying this week. We discussed several ways to find good bargains last week. To add to that is the idea of setting up some alerts on specific items. You can find some info on this from an earlier post at http://mommydaddysavers.com/blog/?p=73. Two other good sites to check out are http://www.dealalerter.com/ and http://www.dealcatcher.com. You can set up both these sites to check a particular gift you are wanting to purchase. DealAlerter will email you when the price drops to the point you have specified. DealCatcher emails you daily or weekly.

One of my all time favorite bargain gift ideas for family members is a home-made calendar with each month featuring pictures of your new baby. Perfect for parents, grandparents and other close relatives. A few photo sites will make calendars for you: http://www.KodakGallery.com/CalOverview.jsp starts at $19.99 and goes down with orders of more than 24, http://www.ShutterFly.com/shop/photo_calendars/product_c10014 is $19.99 for the first and $14.99 for additional ones, and http://www1.snapfish.com/helppricing#calendars is $18.99 for standard calendar and more for fancier options. You could also check pricing at photo processing centers in stores such as Walgreens, Costco, and Sams Club.

Did you put off preparing a costume for your baby? Are you still waiting until stores lower the prices from obscene down to outrageous? Or like me, do you refuse to pay that kind of money for one night for a baby that doesn’t even know what is going on. I’ve scoured the net looking for my favorite homemade costumes you can at the last minute and save your hard-earned money for something that matters. Here are my favorites:

Favorite Animal: Sew or glue “ears” onto an old hooded sweatshirt. Ears can be easily cut from appropriately colored felt. Use a little fabric paint to add stripes or the appropriate animal markings. Use mom’s eyeliner to make a black nose, whiskers or whatever is appropriate on the face.

Casper the Friendly Ghost: This is the old-standard for homemade costumes, but modified slightly to work for baby. Use an old sheet or pillowcase. Of course, cut out armholes. Instead of cutting out eye holes and freaking your baby out covering his or her entire face with no way to keep eye holes lined up with baby eyes – just cut a circle out for the entire face area.

Little Devil: Dress your baby in black. Use mom’s eyeliner to redraw the always mad eye brows. Accessorize with a pitchfork made from cardboard and colored red or formed from aluminum foil. Since you will likely be pushing your baby in a stroller you can skip the pointed tail. It won’t be seen anyway. If you want to add a red cape tie each side under the armpit instead of around the neck.

Little Angel: Take a white T-shirt and clue or sew on wings. If you cannot make your own bite the bullet and buy wings only. Add a gold sash or belt around the waist and a gold headband for the halo.

Baby Bargain Jack-O-Lantern: Dress baby in black shirt or sweatshirt depending on temp. Take pumpkin orange romper, draw pattern on front, and cut out. Place over black out fit for design to really pop. If you want to an extra step, sew the black shirt and orange romper together so the face doesn’t shift or squish up as much.

Sheep: Start with gray, hooded sweatshirt. Glue or sew on felt ears. Lay sweatshirt flat and apply double-sided tape. Press cotton onto tape. Turn over and repeat on other side.

If this doesn’t meet your fancy or you have other things on hand you are trying to turn into a costume, here is a website with 20 more ideas. http://www.fabulousliving.com/index.php?option=com_resource&controller=article&category_id=273&article=21473
