Babies are expensive. We don’t advocate the extreme view of waiting years and years until your financial house is in order. If you wait until you can afford to have a baby you might never! On the other hand, don’t leave everything to chance. It is best to take the middle road approach and create a budget prior to baby arriving. Start learning to live on less and buying things you need, a little at a time, on your new budget.

Mom 2 Mom sales Provide Baby Bargains in weak economy

Have you ever heard of a Mom 2 Mom sale? Apparently this has become quite popular in the Detroit area. I imagine with all the layoffs in the automobile industry it has forced some creativity to take place.

Here’s the idea:

You organize moms with kids outgrowing clothes and toys to gather together. It works sort of like a cross between a yard sale and a flea market. A local church or school hosts the event. They charge $10-$20 to rent a table and $1 admission to the sale-goers. A very simple concept and great way to provide bargains to new moms & dads from other moms & dads.

Consider organizing a Mom 2 Mom sale in your commuity.

Is Skip-A-Payment Month a Good Bargain?

If you have a credit card with Chase, then this month you may have received a statement with a minimum payment of $0. You may have been given this option on car payments, credit card balances and even a mortgage around the holidays as special holiday bonus. At first glance this may seem like a good idea, but is it really?

Let me ask you this…why are these companies in business? It is to make money or be nice to everyone in tough economic times or during the holidays? Clearly they are in it to make money and would not do ANYTHING if they were not going to make money with it. They are financial institutions. We are not a charity in receipt of their generosity. We are their business.

In many cases the skip-a-payment feature actually costs you a fee (typical fee is around $20). The reality is they still come out ahead because not only will they get your money eventually, but now they have collected an extra $20, plus they still acrue interest on the balance so they are collecting interest on interest for the duration.

In the long run this actually increases the income for the financial institutions. So it really is not a bargain for us. However, and I truly hesitate to say this because there are so many other options, if you feel like your back is against the wall, and it’s either take advantage of this skip-a-payment offer or skip-a-meal. you are pulling your hair tryign to figure out how to provide for your new baby or be late on another payment and get late charges. Well then maybe, just maybe it might make sense for you. But before you do anything make sure you get ALL the information. Find out what fees are involved, how interest acrues, what impact this has on your finance rate for the credit card balance and future charges. Make sure you know what you are getting into before you even think about skipping this payment.

Finding Money for Baby Bargains & Christmas

We all know that yard sales are a great source to find baby bargains, but have you taken a step back to realize they are also a good way to find money for your baby bargains. This is especially important with Christmas coming up. Why am I talking about yard sales in November? Because it is unusual. It’s kind of like Christmas in July. Having a Christmas-themed party in the middle of summer is fun. Having a yard sale in the fall can be just as successful as having one in the summer. You can easily make several hundred dollars with a little planning. So get out the hot cocoa and spiced cider and set up for a fall yard sale. Still not convinced?
